Mallets & Manuscripts Repertoire Discussion Group
Goal:
The purpose of these group meetings is to discuss percussion music of all kinds among educators, performers, and composers. By actively discussing repertoire, percussionists will assist each other in learning about newer (or older) music for the purposes of teaching, performing, and pedagogical study. An emphasis should be placed on uplifting works by traditionally underrepresented groups alongside composers established in the percussion canon. Additionally, analysis and discussion enable a more profound understanding of the composer’s intention, and how that informs the pedagogical and learning process. Ultimately, attendees in these meetings will broaden their knowledge of percussion method books, solos, chamber works, and large ensemble works, form a sense of community among a diverse population of percussive peers, and create enthusiasm for the discovery and implementation of new repertoire into music performance and education.
Format:
Monthly 1 hour and 30 mins approximately meeting hosted by Hannah Moore and Joseph Spearman. Occasionally, a special topic or focus for the week might call for a guest host or co-host. In that case, Hannah and/or Joseph will introduce the guest, then moderate the discussion as needed. Meetings will be held on Google Meet.
